Who are we?
The Village Beacon is a collection of SBC-ers who have a heart for the community of Stopsley Village and Putteridge. We have been exploring together for several years now what it means to be light in our community and during this time we have really been enjoying getting to know each other better. It is great seeing the very young to the more senior enjoying time together.
Our mission focus is to support the local businesses, schools and services through prayer, that they would know Godӳ blessing. We have visited each with our prayer card (see example). This has helped to focus our prayers and helped us to engage in conversations throughout our community. We have been really encouraged by the positive responses as we chat to the employees ֠we have spotted our prayer cards up in several of the shops!
What do we do?
Our community is a living and developing community and hence our pattern of meeting has changed several times over recent years. Whilst we have an organised pattern to our life we are also looking to be a family which meets as and when all together or in smaller groups to support one another and to enjoy life.
Our current organised pattern includes:
We meet most Wednesdays in different homes from 5.30pm to share food and news of our weeks. It is an informal time in which children and adults mix and catch up with one another. From 7.30pm we have a devotional time which includes a chance to look at Scripture, to pray for each other and for the community of Stopsley and to discuss anything that we are planning.
One week in the month follows a different pattern. Then we meet at different times and in different places in discipleship groups, where we share with one another and hold one another to account. Our discipleship groups are about 4 or 5 in strong in number, informal in nature and filled with prayer.
Once a month we tend to hold a social time, which have included film nights, bowling and sunset walks among other things.
We look to support one another as witnesses to Christ wherever we go. In addition we have taken time to pray blessing on businesses in the community, give out flapjacks before Easter and we are just beginning to do litter picking as well. Ultimately we are looking to non church people joining us in these activities and to have conversations centered on Jesus which lead people towards faith.

This is a record of some of our activities over the last twelve months or so…
We had our own talented greeting card designer give a demonstration for the children of designing fun Easter greetings cards (which the adults enjoyed just as much- thanks Matthew!) Then the children tried their hand at their own designs (see above), some of which we are using to give the shops and services in Stopsley an Easter greeting with a reminder of our prayer support. The take-away restaurants were the first to receive theirs and we were pleased to see so many of them show us the card we gave them last time, displayed in their window or on their noticeboard.
Trialling our new Stopsley version of Monopoly- Stopoly! There are so many shops and services in Stopsley (over 50), we had to make 2 boards to include them all! Whichever property you land on, you collect the card and pray for the shop/service and all its staff. There are incentives for landing on certain squares (in the form of sweets and chocolates). It certainly helped us to get to know what weӶe got in our village.

We believe God wants to make his love known in our community and we will continue to explore together how we can make him known.
